Otto Addo explains why he substituted Andre Ayew.

Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo has explained why he substituted his captain, Andre Morgan Dede Ayew after he equalized for Ghana.

Portugal’s talisman, Cristiano Ronaldo expertly converted a penalty in the 65th minute. Andre Ayew got the needed goal for Ghana in the 73rd minute kind courtesy an assist from Mohammed Kudus.

However, Andre Ayew got substituted in the 77th minute when Ghana was showing glimpses of clinching another goal in the game. Immediately after his substitution, Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix got doubled the lead for Portugal in the 78th minute. Andre Ayew was seen on the bench disappointed and hitting his water bottle on the turf. Rafael Leao who came off the bench also got the third goal for Portugal two minutes later.

The decision of Otto Addo to bring on Jordan Ayew for his brother Andre got many Ghanaians complaining because they believe the quick two goals by Portuguese were caused by Jordan Ayew. Otto Addo has however explained the reason why he substituted the man who got goal for Ghana.

” First of all, it was a tactical change because he had a yellow card, and I had a little bit fear that he can’t do it like how I wanted. So, I took him off to bring a fresh player on the pitch.” He said.

He also revealed that the substitution did not have any negative impact on the game.

“I don’t think it had a big impact on the game because it was already 1-1 and the game was hectic.” He added.

Ghana will play their second game against South Korea on Monday, 28th November 2022.
